How much should you pay for martial arts training?
I went to a wing chun kung fu school near my house and they wanted a 100 dollar registration fee which includes uniform and then 120 dollars a month for three classes a week. Is this too much for this kind of martial art or am i getting a good deal?

Yes that is too much. I live in Europe and it is about 200 for the whole course.
No that’s normal. When I joined my Muay Thai class, I had to pay a $99 registration fee which included hand wraps and access to the gym any time, then every month I pay $139 for 2 classes.
That’s expensive, but I do get the luxury of training in a gym with instructors taught by a 3 time World Champion, currently ranked, and if I ever stay long enough, I’d be taught by him.
For you, 3 classes a week for $120 is a very good price. Wing chun is a very hard martial art to learn, and instructors can get frustrated sometimes. Besides, they have to pay the bills too, gyms are a business just as much as a restaurant is. $120/month from 1 student for them is nothing.
You’re place is more expensive then other places, just a tad bit more, but you’re training in Wing chun, not Taekwondo, how many Wing chun places are around your area? If there are like 5, then you can shop around, if there is 1, then you should go to it because it offers reasonable prices IMO and I wish I had a Wing chun place by my neighbourhood.
Honestly it depends on the quality of the instruction I will recieve.
When I trained and paid for classes it was $40 / month but that was in from 1978 to 1988. Today that would be like $90 / month on average.
When I trained with other Sensei after I earned my shodan I have paid anywhere from $15 / month to over $200 / month but only if the person was a highly accredited and authentic black belt with great teaching ability. I have also paid anywhere from $50 to over $900 for seminars.
The prices you are quoting are actually pretty normal now a days but I would want to know what I was getting for the $120. How good is this teacher, their ability to teach and is it authentic? Those are what will determine if it is worth it. Good luck.
Seems a bit steep.
There is a quality Martial Arts school near my home that has Judo, Muay Thai; BJJ and MMA available.
The Judo is 50 bucks a month, no limit to the number of classes (the MT, BJJ and MMA is a bit more per month).
Shop around you can do better.
if the teaching is good it’s worth it i pay about half as much as you do but i work for him to get private lessons. he is a good teacher too. so if you decide you don’t like wing chun it’s probably not worth it. but if you enjoy it, take it. learning martial arts can be one of the best things you may ever do with your life.
also i come froma pretty broke family so martial arts is about all i get to do during the summer.
No anything over 200 is to much.I myself was taught by one of bruce lees students father in jeetkunedo! So that’s rare and he was good so i had to pay 150 a month so as long as the teacher is good your good.
