Which format do you prefer classes to be run in?

Camaraderie. As shown in many modern martial arts like bjj where everyone’s friends with each other, no lining up according to rank or bowing, you get to address instructors by their first name, no punishments if you do something incorrectly unless its really wrong and then you get expelled (but still no lecturing) , turning up in casual clothes is fine for most days and social events usaully involves alcoholic drinks and grilled food…

Formality as shown in many more traditional martial arts like karate and judo (e.g. no talking or joking around in class, bowing, wearing traditional clothing, learning some native terms used in the country the martial art was created, lots of push ups and sit ups if you refuse to listen, social event is usually sitting around a table talking about things like family etc)

Just a little survey. Not trying to diss one side or another. I personally prefer the formality over this idea of camaradie because I tend to focus better when everyone’s silent and because…well…I am kinda slack and if someone doesn’t literally stand behind me with a threat, then I don’t really do that well xP

I'm interested in martial arts, anyone care to help me out?

First, I live in southeastern Connecticut, New London county. I was boxing last year but, I just couldn’t keep going to that gym. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a quitter, I just didn’t want to be in a gym with no air conditioning or fans in the 90 degree humid weather…. the crap equipment was bad enough. Now, I’m interested in learning either BJJ (I looked, and couldn’t find a good school/gym), or judo. I want to train with a black belt if possible. If neither BJJ or judo is possible, how could I get into something like sambo or greco-roman wrestling. I really need a grappling base because I plan on becoming an MMA fighter. Any suggestions? sorry for this long question
I looked again for a BJJ or Judo school. Couldn’t find one. Maybe Connecticut isn’t supposed to be fun.

Has anyone got any cool stories of time they have used their martial arts training in real life?

I have only used my bjj once when some guy picked a fight with me at a music festival. I was sitting down listening to music and for no reason he started kicking me in the back so i spun around, grabbed his ankle and tried to crank a heel hook, but he fell to the ground so i popped his knee with a knee bar and walked away.

Any cool stories anyone has?

martial arts, being a 'sport'.?

ok, am i the only one who doesn’t like that martial arts have become ‘sports’?

like, it annoys me to see people wearing martial arts related clothing with out any training, such as UFC, tapout, affliction, and people say it’s no different than wearing a NFL jersey to support a team, didn’t the UFC start as ‘put up or shut up’ thing for artists of different styles? so it’s not ok for the fans to act like they know what they’re talking about.

the martial arts, were not created to entertain people, football, baseball, basketball, were created for the intents of sport, and entertainment. jiu-jistu, karate, TKD, hapkido, aikido, all of those where created to do serious physical harm.

is it just me, or is the categorization of sport the worst thing that has happened to martial arts?
Question M there are very few martial arts that weren’t created to cause maximum damage in minimum time and effort.

judo and BJJ would be examples (judo was created as a watered down version of TJJ, and BJJ is derived for another sport from judo) the few ‘sport’ arts, JKD is meant to do maximum damage for minimal effort in minimal time, but was created for self protection.

traditional jiu-jistu was used by the samurai on the field of battle, as was karate, iaido, fencing was created to sharpen ones swordsmanship for fighting. most martial arts where created to kill.

lycann, you are correct that is how many sports/games of modern did come about, the sport tournaments spawned the mcdojo, i was specifically targeting UFC, it was just the most popular example currently. i have no problems with movies, and tv shows, because with out them i’d bet most people would have never heard of any specific martial art.
ok, to the people saying sparring is what makes martial arts a sport, that isn’t true. point sparring makes it sport, but full contact sparring is training technique. i do not agree with point sparring at all.

and Mr- Tri, Judo was created in japan because people had decided that jiu-jistu matches were becoming to brutal and to violent. this information, was gathered from a former marine who trained judo, was a 7time all judo champ, 3time all service champ, and an olypmic judo alternate for america.

let me repeat myself.

sparring is needed, competition is needed, but these point sparring tournaments, that say you can’t hit to the face, and the only scoring area you can make contact to is the front of the torso kind of things, and that those behind the UFC, don’t do more to emphasize that martial arts aren’t just for fun, and have much more to them than what is done in their fights.
