I have 3 months to get in better shape, any ideas?

Roger Huerta UFC Fight Night 19 Walk-Out Shirt

Here’s the situtation: An injury has forced me to take a 3 month break in all my martial arts. Instead of sitting around getting lazy, what can I do to return in better fighting shape than when I left? I don’t have any equipment right now, but I have a bench in storage and 300 pounds of Olympic weights along with that. I also have a great 4 mile woodsy running route around my house and can currently average around 9:00 a mile. Whats the best exercise for a martial artist?

    Martial Arts training question?

Roger Huerta UFC Fight Night 19 Walk-Out Shirt

I have been involved in different martial arts over such as Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo, Boxing, and Sanshou. I have recently been looking into Judo and I visited a school that said Judo on the front window and took a look inside. There was a Taekwondo class going on and it was nothing I have ever seen before. There were about 15 adults and 20 kids and they were jumping up and down kicking bags. Then when I sat down they went into different groups. The adults split up into two teams of 7 with one keeping score. They put up throwing mats and used them as goals and striking pads as items to hit a ball with. I talked with the instructor if he had a Judo class and he said he only took serious student and I told him that I had been training. He said he didn’t like students coming from other schools and he only trained his own. He also said that I might be interested in his combat fighting MMA thing. My question is why did he put Judo on his door, what does that game have to do with Taekwondo, and why did he not want me coming into his school.

It seems like the usefulness of martial arts has been limited with the invention of gun powder. Should martial arts start incorporating firearms training to keep up with the times? Why or why not?

Martial arts training when you have piercings?

Roger Huerta UFC Fight Night 19 Walk-Out Shirt

I am thinking of starting martial arts training. The discipline i would like to learn is Muay Thai. However, i have quite a number of piercings on my face. (Mainly my ears but also i have an anti brow piercing) and a navel piercing. I realise i cannot train with them in as it could be dangerous but i also don’t want to lose them and i know especially with surface piercings they will heal very quickly. Could i perhaps where a retainer or is that still dangerous? Does anyone have any ideas.
i only ask as i once took my navel piercing out for an hour and it was very painful to put back in as the piercing had partially closed.

Martial Arts training vs. earning your next belt?

Roger Huerta UFC Fight Night 19 Walk-Out Shirt

I enrolled my 9 year old son in a local martial arts center. They teach five element techniques and various other forms. The center is very popular in my town but I’m not sure that my son is going to progress past his second belt. The problem as I see it is in the way the testing is carried out. A student does his training and is taught a new form and then is asked at the end of 2 months whether he(or she) is ready to take the next test or not. During the test the centers Master works all the students in a group through various routines and at the end asks everyone as a group, "Do you believe you are ready to move to the next level and receive your next belt. I have never seen any student in the six months I’ve watched the class say No.
The problem is I think my son has reached a plateau and is probably not going to be ready for testing at the end of this next 8 weeks. I really think this training is good for him and I want him to continue but I think the pace is too fast. I also know that he will take the stress of the the instructor singling him out of the group to work harder, but at some point he’s just going to give up. I don’t want this but I don’t know what to do. I think that asking the question, "are you ready for your next test" to a 9 year old after he comes faithfully to classes for 8 weeks is unfair. It’s like promoting someone in a company to a level of incompetence. When I ask him how he’s doing in his class he just says, Ok.
I signed my son up for this training so that he could learn focus, discipline, get a good workout, and learn how to defend himself. Can someone give me advice on what to do?
