Which martial art shall I choose?
Hi, I’m thirteen and I want to start learning a martial art, the only problem is I don’t know which one I would like to learn. Here’s my criteria:
I would like to learn a cool martial art, it can use anything like sticks hands or swords.
It needs to be near where I am, Buckinghamshire.
I don’t really want a popular one that lots of people do like judo taekwondo or karate.
It can’t be too expensive so know £5000 equipment.
Thanks allot!
Sorry for my misspellings.
OK it seems I wasn’t specific enough so here we go:
I would prefer a martial art that is mainly for self defense in real life situations not for sport or fun, although it would be nice to do it as a Hobie an keep myself fit.
Another preference is for quick sharp strikes and no rolling around and putting people in holds.
As for a life commitment I would prefer a quick to learn kind of style where I can quickly learn the basics and then begin to progress gradually.
Hope this helped!

What kind of grant would be best to apply for, for a small non-profit organization?
My brother-in-law owns a small Mixed Martial Arts Non-Profit Organization in a very small town. He teaches self-defense to women and also teaches school age kids respect and discipline. Again, it is non-profit, but he is having trouble paying for the building and equipment. I’m sure he can get a grant, but I would like to know which type would be best. Thank you in advance for your help!

Recommendation for Martial Arts Training for Self Defense?
I’d like to get some basic training for self-defense. I’m not sure which type of martial arts would be best for me, so perhaps others could provide a recomendation based on the following: I’m a family man (so I don’t have as much free time as I did when I was younger to put into training, etc.); I’m in my mid 30′s (so I’m not as athletic as I was when I was younger); I’m in reasonable shape (not overweight, I like to run, and occasionally lift weights); and I’m not looking to kick someone’s butt, but just defend myself if I can’t avoid a hostile situtation.
I’d prefer to avoid the wrestling on the ground types of martial arts. And I’m probably not the strongest guy in town, so I don’t want to have to rely on strength either.
Thanks!

mma/ martial arts/ respect question?
ok so i found this mma school i want to join and its not really exspensive per month but all of the equipment is and my family cant afford really to drive me there as much as i want. but i know someone who trains with this guy in a certain type of martial arts he wont tell me what style it is because they are really secretive and there is only a few people who do it. and he said he would talk to his sifu if he could train me but his sifu is kind skeptical whether he should train someone my age because the last time he did the guy went out and hurt someone and they dont teach people for violence or sport they teach them for self defense. well next year ill be 18 and i want to start mma but if i join this guys martial arts and then use it when im 18 will that be disrespectful to him? for him to teach me and then me go and do it as a sport and possbily really hurt someone?

Why does there seem to be such a paranoid cross-section of people seeking Martial Arts training?
I’ve been noticing a trend that seems to be increasing that people are seeking "the best, the most effective, for self defense". Some folks go on to ping a laundry list of things they want the style to include… i.e. striking, grappling, back flipping over walls, repelling sharks, charming snakes, beating up fat people, beating up strong people, beating up children, etc…
Does anyone noticed this trend in hyper-focus on self-defense that borderlines on paranoia? Any ideas or theories from where it is coming?

I would like some advice on how to go about in my quest for learning Martial Arts. Any ideas?
After all the price shopping I’ve made I have come to realize that joining a Martial Arts school is out of my budget reach. Some have allowed me to stay even up to a month for free to see if it’s what I’m looking for and I have practically been comfortable in all of the classes that I was in. Everything is cool except that I don’t have enough dough to pay an almost 0 initial fee and then 0 monthly (excluding uniform and equipment). I really, really want to learn Martial Arts but I wish it wasn’t this expensive. Can someone please give me some advice/cool ideas in how to go about it? I mean, is school THE ONLY way to go to learn self-defense? And if I buy instructional dvds, do you think this method is effective? Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

Does teaching martial arts have any value if you don't get paid to do it?
In my experience with the culture in which I live, the U.S. South East region, I am running into a lot of negative attitude and prejudice against my study and teaching of martial arts and self defense. It’s not that people have anything against the arts or self defense in principle, but what seems to be the issue is I dedicate so much time and work into those activities without getting paid a wage.
The people with whom I socially interact, and my family, seem more comfortable and accepting of any type of work I do as long as it pays a wage regardless of whether or not it serves any deep purpose in the scheme of things. I believe they have a hard time assigning a value to what I do without being able to reference to an amount of money or income that results from that work.
I feel the value of the experience, knowledge and training I offer on a voluntary basis is one of helping my fellow human beings empower themselves with skills that can help protect them from harm if harm ever comes their way.
Would I like to be compensated for my services? Yes. However the people I feel most need what I have to offer, for whom the threat of violence is a reality in their environment, live in a socio-economic situation where the money they have goes towards the basic needs of food, shelter, clothing, and such. Any money they paid me would be taking resources away from other areas of their lives.
More and more this issue is becoming a problem I have to address as I invest more time in teaching.
Do you feel teaching martial arts and self defense has any value if there is not fee associated with it? How would you approach dealing with the biases and opinions of those who don’t see the value in doing such a thing?
Added::
I should add that I am perfectly capable and know how to open a school that would be very profitable in my market. However, if I did so it would go against my principles and moral ethics. This is one of the central issues that causes the negative reaction/predjudice from those with whom I associate.
@Bruce – My spiritual beliefs are similar to a monks and I have embraced many of the philosophical ethics of that stereotype. It just happens to be counter cultural where I live.
Added:
I would be very happy to take a vow of poverty and live only on the amount necessary to meet my basic needs, however my wife and extended family would not be happy at all with such a life.

DVD like "Fight Science", but compares different martial arts?
I’m looking for a DVD of a program that I watched years ago. I thought it was "Fight Science", but I just bought it, and that’s not it. This one uses the electronic/scientific equipment to assess martial art strikes, like the one I’m looking for does, but the one I’m looking for looked at different moves from different martial art styles. The one I just bought (titled "Fight Science", from National Geographic), does not do that. It looks at MMA, self-defense, and special ops. Interesting, but not the program I’m looking for (and the one I promised many people we would watch this coming Friday night!)
