Which martial art shall I choose?
Hi, I’m thirteen and I want to start learning a martial art, the only problem is I don’t know which one I would like to learn. Here’s my criteria:
I would like to learn a cool martial art, it can use anything like sticks hands or swords.
It needs to be near where I am, Buckinghamshire.
I don’t really want a popular one that lots of people do like judo taekwondo or karate.
It can’t be too expensive so know £5000 equipment.
Thanks allot!
Sorry for my misspellings.
OK it seems I wasn’t specific enough so here we go:
I would prefer a martial art that is mainly for self defense in real life situations not for sport or fun, although it would be nice to do it as a Hobie an keep myself fit.
Another preference is for quick sharp strikes and no rolling around and putting people in holds.
As for a life commitment I would prefer a quick to learn kind of style where I can quickly learn the basics and then begin to progress gradually.
Hope this helped!

why does no one take this into account when training in martial arts?
The clothes you are wearing at the time of an attack. What if you got attacked while you are still wearing your stiff business suit for work? Your clothes can impede your ability to perform techniques properly. Nobody ever takes that into account when picking a martial art.
I would like to see someone do something like taekwondo in a business suit

Does a gi really cost THIS much?
My sensei told me that if I was serious about learning judo (which I am!) then I should buy a uniform next lesson. I have been there for four lessons now so this seems like a reasonable request and he didn’t pressure me or anything either. However, I nearly fainted when I saw the price tag.
0 Hong Kong Dollars! (around USA Dollars)
Now, I am only a high school student so money is limited and buying this Gi will probably mean that I’ll have to cut back on all sort of luxuries (e.g. snacks, movies, karaoke and buying Starcraft 2) for around two months. However, if this is a kind of requirement then well…I’ll just have to stomach it.
I was just wondering though if the price tag was a bit too expensive? My taekwondo dobok only costed 0 HKD ( USD) and another dojo I considered joining before (but didn’t in the end ,as I found out that they GAVE belts out to students after a period of time without bothering to test them) sold them for 0 HKD ( USD).
Is there a reason that my sensei is selling me the Gi at such a high price? Do you think he will be offended if I buy a gi outside at his dojo (say, at a local martial art equipment shop)?
P.S. Sorry if I came off as a cheap skate!

martial arts training afters scoliosis surgery?
I had scoliosis surgery 12 years ago and have harrington rods on my spine. However, i have done may activities since the surgery, including taekwondo for two years, without issues and have now considered hapkido. I was just wondering if it is safe for people who have had this surgery considering the throwing and falling of this martial art. I have done a little of it in my taekwondo class and didn’t have issues, but we never got to the full extent of falling and throwing.
