Where to learn about martial arts?

Roger Huerta UFC Fight Night 19 Walk-Out Shirt

I am intersted in taking up martial arts but don’t know what style I should take up, what equipment needed and generally how to get started. I was wondering if anyone can point me to a site which lays down this information in an easy to understand format?

jackie S. provide a good link, but it is pretty basic and doesn’t contain much info. For instance it says karate is punching and kicking which it is, but it does not mention the fact that karate also has many grappling motions.

I agree with PLM(thumbs up) that the first step is determining what you want from it. Once you have figured that out, then ask what styles fall into that catagory. the hard aprt is seperating the answers from the people who really know what is what, and the people who have no idea and just like to recomend styles that are in the UFC or they saw on fight quest/human weapon and think it makes the experts.

you can generally trust answers from most of the top contributers on here, in fact most of their answers will be pretty much the same.

Once you decide on a style(s) to check out, you will need to research what is availible in your area. At that point there are many good answers on here about how to find a good instructor and a good school, and what to look out for and avoid. Just use the search feature.

Then armed with that knowledge visit your target schools and watch or maybe even participate in a few classes, and go from there.

The fact is that if you are not willing to put in the time to do this then you are probably notgoing to have the dirve to go anywhere in martial arts. Just remember that what style questions on here bring otu a lot of people who really have no idea beyond what they have seen on tv or read about on here.

feel free to E-mail me for more information. Other good people to listen to are Big Dog, Pugpaws, Judomofo, JWbulldog, rear nake djoke, james24 i believe, Wulf, William P, RJ, Aaron J, prince Louphler, Sifu frank, Sensei, and a few more. None of them will steer you wrong, and all will give you good sound advice.

First you need to figure out the reason WHY you are taking considering taking up martial arts.

Competition? Self-defense? Lose some weight? Improve your confidence? Raise your self-esteem? Win a trophy? Look cool?

There are many many reasons, once you recognize what you’re seeking to achieve then you should do some google searching and gather the intel about various forms and styles that fit your regime.

Hopefully you are intelligent enough to filter through all the bullshit on the internet regarding martial arts and don’t get scammed into buying useless shit.
